Directions to Phefumula

Phefumula is situated at the foot of the Magaliesburg, near Maanhaarrand in Northwest Province, 17 km west of Mount Grace and Lovers’ Rock. It is accessed from the R24 Rustenburg road. The turn-off is just after the Vlakfontein road, 5km after the Marikana road that crosses Breedts’ Nek to Buffelspoort Dam, Utopia and Mountain Sanctuary Park.

GPS Co-Ordinates: S 25 degrees 53.871’ E 027 degrees 24.295’ (Yellow sign RM 48 - 54)

From Johannesburg:

• Take Beyers Naude off ramp from N1 South
• Head North West on Beyers Naude, towards Muldersdrift for approximately 12km
• Pass Garden World on right, Casalinga on left
• Just after the Muldersdrift turnoff take the Krugerdorp onramp onto the N14
• Heading west, pass the Muldersdrift (Driefontien) off ramp
• At what was the four way stop, now a traffic light controlled intersection, turn right, continuing with the N14 (Pinehaven Sasol garage on corner, Krugersdorp hill ahead)
• Continue 10km until you intersect the R24 (R563) to Rustenburg/Ventersdorp.
• Turn right, passing the Oaktree Zenex garage
• Continue on the R563 towards Hekpoort (do not take the left fork to Ventersdorp N14)
• Continue 20.6km. Passing Greensleeves on left, Broederstroom turn-off on right.
• Descend into valley
• As you leave the valley look out for the Boer War blockhouse on the right
• Pass piggery on left
• Turn left at the Magaliesburg (R24) sign
• Continue 10.9km, passing Goblin’s Cove, Bekker Schools on right
• At the intersection with the R24 to Rustenburg, turn right. Lovers’ Rock on right
• Continue 12km, passing Aquador Supermarket on left, Welcome to Northwest Province sign, Maanhaarrand Café, Old Post Pub, Hassen’s General Dealer on right
• Pass Marikana road on right
• After 5km pass Vlakfontein road on left
• 100 meters further on, turn right onto dirt road (entrance to a hatchery) yellow sign indicates RM 48 – 54

• Continue along dirt road towards the mountain, 3.8km in all. The first bit doesn’t look good but it does get better
• Pass RM50 and RM49 signs
• Go through green gate with sign Mapogo
• Pass RM50A
• 300m further on the road does a 90 degree to the left, Phefumula sign
• Continue straight up against the fence line.
• Follow jeep track as it veers left to cottages/house

Alternative via Magaliesburg (recommended route):

• Take Beyers Naude off ramp from N1 South
• Head north west on Beyers Naude, towards Muldersdrift for approximately 12km
• Pass Garden World on right, Casalinga on left

• Heading west, pass the Muldersdrift (Driefontien) off ramp
• At the four way stop, turn right, continuing with the N14 (Sasol garage on corner, Krugersdorp Hill ahead)
• Continue 10km until you intersect the R24 (R563) to Rustenburg/Ventersdorp.
• Turn right, passing the Oaktree Zenex garage

• Turn left onto Maropeng road, signposted Magaliesburg (R24)
• Pass Maropeng on right
• Continue 10km
• At intersection, turn right to Rustenburg/Magaliesburg R24.
• Continue 8km
• Enter Magaliesburg (watch the 60kmh limit)
• Continue through Magaliesburg on R24, crossing rail lines
• Pass Mirjams, Wickers, Mount Grace, Lovers Rock on right
• Continue 12km, passing Aquador Supermarket on left, Welcome to Northwest Province sign, Maanhaarrand Café, Old Post Pub, Hassen’s General Dealer on right
• Pass Marikana road on right
