Activities

Walking
The energetic can walk to the top of the Magaliesburg mountain and then wander along the ridge for several kilometres to enjoy the spectacular views on both sides. Bring your day-pack, book a picnic basket with tasty home made ‘goodies” and have lunch while enjoying a panorama from the oldest mountain range in the southern hemisphere. Demarcated walks through forest and veldland take an hour or several, depending on your choice. Once again a picnic of home-made delicacies can be enjoyed anywhere along the route. Add to this a bottle of wine or bubbly for the perfect spread. Picnic baskets are equipped with plates, utensils and glasses. Available for R250 (not including wine – you can bring your own or we can supply on request)

Mountain Biking
There are approximately 10km of trails on the farm with a few technical bits. A 100m ride along the shoulder of the R24 gives you access to many kilometres of dirt road. 5 km along the shoulder gives you access to Breedt’s neck pass and the dirt roads to Buffelspoort dam or Hekpoort. For the not so energetic adventure-seekers there are a number of demarcated trails through forests and across veld. With a day-pack this too can be interrupted by a stop for a restorative picnic. Bring your own bikes.

Horse Riding
Every Sunday at about 10h00 Dave or Jenni lead out-rides along one of the numerous trails. All levels of riding are accommodated from a gentle walk along the side of the mountain with a spectacular view of the valley to a more energetic canter through open veld and vlei or a combination of both. The horses are well trained and a variety of saddles are available. On the way home your hosts will provide a sparkling wine or Pimms stop on the side of the mountain with magnificent views of the valley at your request. You have the option of bringing your own horses; trained grooms and stables are provided.

Horse trails :
• 1 hour ride – R150 per person
• 1 and a half hours ride – R200 per person
• 2 hour ride – R250 per person
• 2 hour ride with a drinks stop – R300 per person

Wildlife
Phefumula is surrounded on three sides by game farms, the fourth open to the mountain and the Magaliesburg Protected Nature Environment, so there are a number of animals that may be seen on walks or rides. These include raptors and this part of the range is the home to the rare and splendid Black Eagle as well as an abundant bird life. A number of different antelope species are often seen; from kudu to the smaller antelope such as mountain reedbuck and duiker. Quaint warthogs are also frequently encountered. Monkeys and baboons are to be seen all over the farm but mostly on the mountain slopes. A few lucky people have had the privilege of spotting timid leopard, which occur in numbers in these mountains.
